The rings are made up of segments. The segments are
assembled in pairs on a circular rod and then staggered so that the gap
between each segment does not cause a leak. There are 8 segment pairs
for each ring groove.

Each segment is about 10" long. Each pair is made of
one cast iron segment and a bronze segment.
